Definitions Recommended for Official Status (Official, 2004)

T-56 Absorbent - A material having the capacity to take into its mass a second substance.

T-57 Hydrogel - A colloidal gel in which water is the dispersion medium

T-58 Absorbed Fertilizer - A fertilizer that has been taken into an absorbent material.

T-59 Molasses - The thick viscous by product resulting from refined sugar production.

S-11 Dimethyl Sulfone (DMS) is a sulfur compound that has the formula C2H6SO2.

P-15 Superphosphate Is a product obtained when phosphate rock is treated either with sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, or a mixture of these acids. The guaranteed percentage of available phosphate shall be stated as part of the name. Other nutrients present above minimal levels may be guaranteed.
 
 

New Definitions to be Adopted (Tentative, 2004)

Fe-21 Magnetite Rock is a natural rock containing iron materials of sufficient purity and quantity to permit its use as an iron source. The principle iron compound is magnetite, Fe3O4.

K-17 Potassium Acetate (fertilizer quality) is the potassium salt of acetic acid having the formula KC2H3O2.

S-12 Magnesium Thiosulfate (fertilizer quality) is a product composed principally of Mg2S2O3.2H2O. It is commercially available in granular form and in aqueous solution. The guaranteed percentage of magnesium and sulfur shall be stated as part of the brand name.

N-44 Alfalfa Meal is produced from alfalfa which has been mowed, chopped, dried and ground.

N-45 Brewers Yeast is the dried non-fermenting, non-extracted yeast of the botanical classification Saccharomyces resulting as a byproduct from the brewing of beer and ale.

N-46 Brewers Grains are the dried extracted residues of barley malt and/or other cereal grains from the manufacture of wort or beer.

N-47 Soybean Meal is the product remaining after extracting most of the oil from whole soybeans.

N-48 Cottonseed Meal is the product remaining after extracting most of the oil from whole cottonseeds.

T-60 Fermentation is an enzymatic ally controlled aerobic breakdown of energy rich compounds (e.g., carbohydrates to carbon dioxide and alcohol or an organic acid) caused by the biological or biochemical transformations of bacteria, fungi, or enzymes.

Cu-18 Copper Oxychloride is a mixture of variable proportions of copper (II) hydroxide and copper (II) chloride resulting from the partial acidulation of copper oxide with hydrochloric acid.

B-9 Boron Ethanolamine is an organic complex of ethanolamine and boric acid.

T-61 Synthetic Fertilizer – Any fertilizer manufactured from one or more synthetic materials containing no animal parts, animal byproducts, manures, or renderings.

T-62 Fertilizer Quality specifies the suitability of a defined material for use as a fertilizer or in a mixed fertilizer which use in fertilizers shall not be deemed adulteration.

T-63 Organic Input – a fertilizer whose ingredients comply with the requirements of the National Organic Program (NOP) Final Rule as specified in 7 CFR Part 205.

28. Labeling of Organic Input Products. Products intended for use as organic inputs may make statements on the products label that affirm that the product is in accord with the National Organics Program (NOP) (e.g., "suitable for organic farming", "acceptable for use in organic production", "meets National Organic Program requirements for organic production", or "meets USDA [US Department of Agriculture] standards for organic production) and may use the logos issued by recognized agencies such as OMRI (Organic Materials Research Institute), USDA, certifying agencies, state programs, or other recognized organic input listing services. Such statements about organic inputs are exempt from requirements pertaining to organic labeling under the fertilizer law.
